The Shamokin Cemetery

Welcome to Shamokin, Where the population once
topped 50,000, the largest man made coal bank still
stands and The Eagle Silk Mill was Once the largest
textile building under one room with 379,000 sq ft.
Here the true melting pot of America's heritage began
with many English, Irish, German, Polish, Welsh and
Ukranian Families made their homes in the black
dirt around the Coal Mines.

The Cemetery was Incoporated in 1859 and open for
public burials in 1860. After 160 years there are over
16,000 souls buried on the side of the 18 acre
mountain. Every family has a story that began in the
black dirt.

There is a story beneath every stone and I'm always
asking people to share their stories, everyone has a
great story and a lot of history.

Community Mausoleum

The Main Mausoleum was originally designed to have 200 burial crypts, 2 windows and "The Shamokin Cemetery" engraved on the exterior. After Oscar Dockey and the cemetery board were done negotiating the Mausoleum would have 160 burial crypts, 3 Stained Glass Windows, A small chapel area and the engraving on the exterior would be the a verse from the biblical Song of Solomon. The construction began in September 1915, and was completed March 1916.

In 1932 the Board Voted to begin negotiations for a 2nd Community Mausoleum that would include two stories and a caretaker's apartment. Due to the Great Depression the funding was not available and the 2nd Mausoleum was never built.
